Silly me, scouting and soil-nitrate testing on the hottest day of the year. Well so far so good. I've been in beets and corn all day so far I am finding that last week's high winds seem to be the biggest obstacle at the moment. Damage fron the high winds appear similar to herbicide damage on the lower leaves but can include ripping and tearing of the leaf tissue. With the strange planting season we've had so far, deficiencies are starting to show evidence indicating, it is most certainly time to foliar feed these crops. Understanding the plants needs through tissue and soil nitrate testing may return more profit per acre to you than a blanket solution, so start there. Results are usually returned within 2 business days so that timely remedies can be made.
The 4-6 leaf beets might be getting a little nitrogen hungry. Corn I'm scouting today is in the 3 to 5 leaf stage so also prime for a shot of N. We should be thinking about adding a shot of foliar nutrition in our herbicide passes on both of these highly valuable crops this year. Disease pressure are already evident so additional protection and uptake agents like urea phosphites and kelps would be a very wise $2/ acre investment. Stay cool and keep farming!
